Jesus at UW

What would Jesus Look Like at the University of Washington?

As a believer in Jesus this is an exciting question to consider, and truly one that anyone who claims to follow Jesus ought to consider in their own personal context.

While Jesus’ presence is an amazing thought to consider, it’s also sobering on a personal level because as his disciple I’m supposed to represent him wherever I am. This is a great privilege, but also a humbling reminder of my tremendous need for growth.

Looks

I don’t believe Jesus’ physical appearance would be anything people around him would consider special. The Bible says of him, “He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him.”

The Campus

I can see Jesus enjoying a sunny day in the quad, admiring the beauty of the cherry blossom trees that he himself created; or on a bench looking at Mt. Rainier and praising God the Father in heaven. On a rainy day I envision him sharing his umbrella or coat with a person in need.

He would most likely walk wherever he was going and take public transportation when he needed to go further away. By no means would he avoid any people, but instead make eye contact that let people know that they’re seen and loved.

Selflessness

During Jesus’ time on earth, he was known as a selfless servant, and I’m confident he would be the same on UW campus. He said of himself that he didn’t come to be served, but to serve and give his life as a ransom for many.

Love

No doubt Jesus would be filled with a great love for every individual that walks the grounds at UW. Jesus has compassion for the crowds, and would take time to make individuals feel special and cared for. While much of the activity on campus is fast paced, I picture Jesus being slow and deliberate, noticing people that others would be quick to bypass.

Jesus would certainly be gracious toward the homeless that travel through, perhaps healing their health issues. He would be helpful for international students and everyone else that feels far from home.

Boldness

During his ministry in Israel, Jesus was totally unashamed of who he was and the mission he was called to. This left him without fear of what others thought of him.

Jesus would no doubt be bold to proclaim the truth about himself and God’s plan to redeem all people from the death that comes from sin. He wouldn’t shy away from addressing the fact that we are broken people in need of healing. I imagine him being quick to be gracious to those who are humble enough to admit their needs.

Jesus willingness to help people with their temporary needs points to his ability to meet deeper spiritual needs. He would not only feed people, but tell them that he’s the bread of life. He would heal people of mental health issues and let them know that he is the Great Physician.

The Cross

Ultimately we do know that Jesus chose to live a selfless life of love that ended in the greatest personal sacrifice at the cross. He died to atone for the sins of the world, and that includes everyone who walks the campus at UW. He resurrected that all might have hope of eternal life with him. For centuries he’s been calling men and women alike to follow him. I believe to this day he is calling everyone on the University of Washington campus to come and follow him.
